update - I’m off the month of July, more or less. I’m actually fine with that. LONG story short, people stuck up for me and I could have had it a lot worse.
You get a meeting invite for 2:45pm on a Friday, from your boss, and the other people invited to the meeting are a division director you work with (but not directly for ) and someone from HR.
Fuck.

HOWEVER!!
I believe this will be a furlough, not a straight-up layoff. My actual job is pretty secure, I am very much needed and they don’t pay me that much either, so I’m reasonably confident of returning to work before the school year begins, probably August.
AND. My kids are increasingly likely to be without summer camp options, so we’ll need full-time child care ... so ... problem solved. I actually will very much welcome having the summer off. I just hope I’m welcomed back in the fall / late summer, and the university doesn’t collapse after all this.
So I’m torn. The last few weeks have been really, really challenging. I don’t know how much of that is because I’ve been trying to work on top of taking care of the kids, and everything else... but I may have a chance to find out, for better or for worse. Financially, we’ll be OK. My benefits would continue through work and I can collect unemployment.
One thing is for sure, I’d be burning through a lot of $1.50/gal gas in the boat. Hell yeah. And putting a lot of miles on my mountain bike. I am categorically incapable of boredom, so I will have no trouble filling the time. Harvesting firewood, household projects, yard work, building mountain bike trails, hiking, biking, swimming, exploring with the kids; grocery shopping and cooking and laundry.
In any case, wish me luck.
this is a fun way to burn 37 gallons of gas at a time, especially when it’s cheap

Not great, hopefully it’s nothing, but if it is a a furlough or layoff, at least the boosted unemployment payment should take some of the pain.

You know, before “this” all happened, I was trying to move up in the slightest, smallest way imaginable ... and it was all but guaranteed so long as I wanted it. And... here we are. It’s not a promotion lol but thanks

Exactly... I can’t imagine it’s truly nothing... but I do know it won’t be a layoff - I know quite a few people who have already been notified of a furlough. And yeah, ironically, I might actually come out ahead financially.

Good luck! Being furloughed sucks, but it does free up a lot of time for projects or fun.

That’s a great attitude and it really helps that you’ll be ok financially.
Sounds like there’s a high probability your guess is correct — hope it all goes as you wish!

I hope its a promotion, or nothing, or at the worst a furlough. But it sounds like you got options, so thats good. Best of luck!

After giving you a heads up I would guess your read is correct. At least in oil and gas layoffs are a “hey could you come talk to me but not in my office” affair.

It really will solve a problem, honestly, if I’m furloughed. It’s going to be really hard to work all summer with the kids going crazy, and honestly I’m not sure I can really stay busy all summer without people on campus - I’m less busy in the summer to begin with, other than projects that can wait.

Hey, thanks, will do. Like I said, I’m torn. I’m nervous that a furlough will turn into more than that when things don’t go back to normal in the fall, or for the inevitable “next time” because in the 6 years I’ve been at the university, it seems like every year we’re in some kind of budget crisis. I’ve been largely insulated from that so far. This time I think I’m less lucky.
But then also this solves a huge potential problem for us over the summer, and I’ve wanted a summer off since the first one I had to really work after college. So there’s that. And that my kids are little and I’d get a ton of time with them, which, while exhausting, I’ll soon look back on it fondly I’m sure.
We’ll see. I’ll post an update with scotch later. My wife already said she’d open champagne if I get the summer off haha.

July isn’t too bad (if it stays limited to that). A pretty good boating month I assume.

Right - I’m not positive I’ll be back in July, but actually I’m taking the first week in august off anyway haha. So... assuming I go back, this is going to be a lot of mountain and lake and bike and kid time!

Considering what you posted earlier, a July off sounds pretty good! Just to make sure, is everything still secure after?

Yeah, this is pretty close to best case scenario. Someone was pushing to keep me on longer than almost everyone else... and here we are. Pretty near ideal honestly. I feel 90% about going back, I’m pretty secure, unless there’s nothing to go back to, which could happen.
